Four LIFT Tutor Specialists, Sally Clark-Raphael, Meredith Bailey, Kim Weidmann, and Mary Lou Hoffman have just completed a 3-day workshop for using a specific scientific-based program to teach reading skills. This program will be used with selected homeless adults to form their foundation of needed reading skills.
LIFT will provide two levels of tutoring. The first level provides Tutor Specialists specifically trained in reading programs. A second level provides Tutor Generalists that will support the student as a reading coach. They will be working with the student to reinforce the reading rules taught by the specialists.
Homeless adults that have been interviewed for this program and assessed for their reading skills were found on average to be functioning at a third-grade level. Forgive me in using the cliché “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” but in fact, one very presentable soft-spoken individual tested to be functioning at first-grade or less reading level. Based on first impressions, the LIFT Assessment Specialist and myself were very surprised with this encounter.
Stay tuned, over time LIFT will share with you the progress of our students. The launch of this new Mobile Loaves & Fishes program continues to encounter evidence that support national studies of widespread low literacy skills among the homeless population. Studies further support that improving the reading skills in an individual result in a transformation of how they see themselves and how others see them. LIFT is a ministry toward transforming lives and literacy is the tool for realizing this transformation. Reading skills equals dignity.
Thank you for your ongoing encouragement and support.
