It’s unbelievably hot outside. When you hop in the car to get the day started, you can’t bear to touch the steering wheel until it’s cooled off, but when it does you can go on your way. You are a sweaty mess just walking from your car to your destination, but once you are where you need to be, the cool air graces you and you are refreshed. You crank your AC up in your house and grab some ice cold water because that heat is intolerable and within minutes you can breathe again.
Now, imagine you are a person who is homeless. You have nowhere to escape from the fiery hand of the sun and nothing to quench that thirst.
That’s where we all come in. You are cordially invited to join us in our mission to KEEP AUSTIN COOL! Here is all we need from you: if you have or can get a pickup truck and/or SUV and an ice chest, come on down to our commissary in the West Lake Hills area (email us at [email protected] for precise instructions/directions) where we will supply plenty of water bottles and ice for you to pass out to our brothers and sisters in need, all summer if you are game. THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO!!! You see your sister on the side of the road, give her some water. You see your brother at the bus stop resting and wiping his brow, give him some water. See, that’s not so hard.

Pat from Starbucks here. My family is so in on this!!!!! I'll email the address stated, and we'll be moving on this ASAP. IN fact, this is like a special message to me as yesterday there was a young(er) girl standing at the intersection of 360 & Walsh Tarlton (sp?) with a sign asking for $18 to get home to Chicago, IL, as well as cold H2O. I was so moved by this that I just put my cup of water out the window for her - I could not even speak. She said it was okay, and that she had enough water. She was trying to comfort me, while she was the one standing in 100+ degree heat with a sign. I cry even now as I type this.
So, you see Alan, this is a mission for my family.
See you soon.
WE LOVE YOU!!!!!

It's so easy to judge others and speculate as to why they're in the situation they're in. I have caught myself doing that in the pat, unfortunately. Doing so hardens your heart over time towards those in need, no matter the reason. We, as a society need to begin practicing love vs. judgment and disconnect from the needs of our fellow brothers and sisters. It's time to start a movement...one that will become a force to be reckoned with. One that will bring love, respect and harmony back to our society. We have to look out for one another and not let our hearts be hardened by past experiences.
