After seeing so much of Alan in the news lately, I am finding it real hard to believe that there are people in our great Austin community that do not believe we have a problem with chronic homelessness. Last week I served more than 50 people in line. This week I had over 45. It seems as times get harder with our economy, I see more and more people.
This morning Kevin told me he thinks Alan should run for a political office. My thought is anyone with a deep passion can do anything they want, Thank God for people like Alan and all those who serve in Mobile Loaves & Fishes. I am honored to be a part of this charity. As I serve more people, my truck seems to get more and more full every week. I try not to forget things but I always seem to.
I remembered the Dog Food this morning for Pokie and her cool dog that drinks coffee. I even remembered Derrik’s Radio. Derrik told me this morning that he is getting his head straight and lifting himself up off the streets. He has his sights beyond being homeless. He found a place to stay and starts work early next week. It is always hard to start a new beginning but also very exciting. I know God is with Derrik every step of the way and he will succeed in anything he does. He is determined and I am excited to be a part of his life during this transition.
Steven was in line this morning. He always makes me smile. He asked if “we” could have a sandwich, then he said “I” need to stop talking in plural. That was quickly followed by an “Umm, we need to stop speaking in plural” How can you not smile at that?
James was there this morning. He came back about 5 times after the line died down. Once for cookies, then coffee, then cocoa. I like James and miss him talking. We used to talk about church and God, but he has become less talkative lately. Unfortunately, I see that way too often.
Richard was in line for the first time in a few weeks. I was out of his favorite Vanilla cookies, but he left with a full belly and some new clothes to wear.
Patrick got there early enough to be 2nd in line this morning. He and Richard got some T-shirts and plenty of food. Patrick loves MREs and it is always nice to chat with him.
Dogman was first in line. I had his BBQ chips waiting and gave him a can of soup and an egg for later.
I forgot about the cookies so next week he gets two!! I was blessed to see Kevin this morning. Kevin has been an inspirational story to all that know him. He is battling alcoholism and seems to be winning. He is trying to stay strong as he misses his son who is fighting for our country in Iraq . I love talking with him and continue to pray for his safety and well being.
All in all it was an awesome morning. I am very lucky to be blessed with the ability to serve, feed those who hunger in Austin and clothe all of my brothers and sisters in need, even if they call me fat J
